Doula Care

Doula [δούλη] greek
„woman, who serves the woman“
A Doula is a companion who is usually present before, during and after the birth of a child for the holistic support of the mother. She usually accompanies in addition to a midwife and does not perform any medical interventions, but knows the needs, fears and wishes of the becoming parents well in order to strengthen them in the best possible way.
A Doula is continuously at the mother's side as a personal companion throughout the entire experience of birth.
Some Doulas also accompany processes around death
or other initiations.
The tradition of Doulas is based on one of the most primal practices of humanity. In times of transition, women came together - attending, mending, supporting, comforting, protecting and passing on knowledge from previous generations and lineages.
Especially the times of initiation from maiden to woman, from mother to crone, pregnancy, death and birth were seen as elemental rites of consciousness and can also be celebrated and integrated today to gain deeper understanding of Self through honouring where we are at.
Anyone interested in a self-empowered birth can be enriched by holistic attendance.
Bringing a human being into the world is far more than a physical act.
This phase of life is sensitive.
In it lie an untamed natural power and uncertainty, vulnerability, joy and yet unknown sensations. A doula offers her experience to guide the becoming parents deeper into trust.
She can educate about natural procedures and options.
If, for example, close family cannot be present or the partner is absent, it can be very reassuring to be held emotionally by an empathetic person. But especially when a partner and perhaps older children are involved, the presence of a Doula can have a balancing effect in support of the partner in their role.
As a Doula, I serve to make the birth experience more wholesome and rounded. This means I adapt my work to the circumstances.
If our first meeting feels compatible, we meet a few times during pregnancy so that I can get to know how we work best together and what I can do for you. I can also be reached over distance for information and support.
Two weeks before the estimated time of birth my on-call service begins until the baby is born. During the birth I stay continuously by your side from the moment you decide and in postpartum weeks we meet for a personal summary and integration of the birth experience.
I am open to any chosen place of birth. Whether it's a home birth, a freebirth, in a birth centre or a clinic - I can bring you information about the options so that you can make a conscious well-informed choice for a compatible space.
Currently I mainly attend births in Dresden and Radebeul, Germany, but also travel abroad for birth attendance (in future particularly in the South of England). We can find individual arrangements for this option.
At the moment, German health insurance does not usually cover the costs of Doula Care. The service must be paid for privately.
It is worth asking your own health insurance company for the latest information though. If there are financial difficulties, please contact me and we will find a solution.
It is worth getting in touch at any time during pregnancy.
Most women contact me within the first months of pregnancy and we plan our meetings so that it feels coherent until the birth begins. But even if you are about to give birth, I recommend getting in touch as soon as possible or if you need support in the postpartum period.
The first days and weeks after birth are deeply imprinting for mother and child. The more clearly the areas of responsibility are structured and assigned, the more everyone involved can ease into the new situation.
I offer my support on an hourly basis. Then, for example, I help with everyday activities, carry the child while you take a bath,
go for a walk with siblings so you can sleep, accompany you to important appointments, cook a nourishing meal, assist you with breastfeeding or simply listen to you.

The way we begin something
often shapes the pattern of the entire narrative.
I believe we can do a lot of good by welcoming our children in peace and security. The current western health care system is extremely helpful for acute cases, but has, in my opinion, taken us further away from the inherent knowledge of self-healing power and natural alternatives, mainly for the sake of efficiency and profit. Birth is not a medical condition. It is a portal experience. It needs devotion, surrender and trust. As a doula I can encourage you to make conscious decisions and arrangements so that your inner security leads to release. Therefore my involvement and contribution as a Doula adapts to the given situation and to your wishes.
I truly believe that your body innately knows how to birth your child.
As a Doula I can, among other things:
- share knowledge about pregnancy, birth and postpartum
- find out with you during pregnancy which birth setting suits you best
- help you work through previous birth experiences
- hold space during birth
- naturopathic support (herbal medicine, homeopathy, nutrition,...)
- holistic assistance (psychosomatics, energy work, connecting body and soul, mental relief, balancing the elements,...)
- help you to unwind (breath, massage, create comfort)
- hold your hand, be with you
- be hands-off in the next room, ready for when you need me
- articulate your wishes and fears in hospital scenarios
- support and relieve your partner
- prepare food, drinks and warm towels during home birth, look after older siblings,...
- prepare for the postpartum period with you
- strengthen self-care and intuition
- support loss and traumatic experiences
- hold rituals for letting go and inviting in (for example Mother Blessings)
- work through your birth experience with you afterwards
- bring you closer to your power and intension
